Custodian Charged with Having Sex with Student
A Reading School District custodian has been arrested on charges of having sex with a 13-year-old student at the Gateway School for the Arts. 69 News was in West Reading this afternoon as 43-year-old Fernando Torres was arraigned by District Justice Timothy Dougherty on multiple counts of statutory sexual assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, and related charges.
The alleged assaults happened on January 29, February 5, and February 6. According to court documents, Torres had sex with the student in a girls' restroom on the first floor of the school. They say surveillance video shows that Torres placed his janitorial supply cart in front of the door and a yellow plastic placard indicating that the restroom was closed. The two were then seen leaving the restroom about three minutes later. A letter the school district sent home to parents mentions inappropriate contact with a second student, but police don't believe there are any more students involved. School officials say Torres has been suspended from his job.
