A fourth-grade teacher in the Catasauqua Area School District was charged earlier this month with possessing and purchasing cocaine.

Joseph R. Abraham, 53, was arrested on Oct. 4 after buying cocaine through a Catasauqua woman who was also arrested, according to a probable cause affidavit. He has been purchasing cocaine for five months, according to the affidavit.

An elementary school teacher for 31 years, Abraham is now "on leave pending the investigative result," said Catasauqua Area School Superintendent Robert Spengler.

"While we are investigating, he is not in the classroom," said Spengler.

Spengler said the district's internal investigation "indicates there was no student involvement and no activity on school property."
